Understanding Comics: Chapter 9

The final chapter of Understanding Comics wraps up McCloud's final points about comics as a medium and it's potential to change in the art world with our help. Here's one of the quotes that left an impact on me:

"I believe we all have something to say to the world. I'm a firm believer in the inherent worth of all inner truths." - McCloud, 196.

I think it's really cool that McCloud puts so much faith into humanity's artistic creativity and every individual's meaning in this world. Even though this text was primarily about understanding the art of comics and defining them as "sequential art," most of his theories can be accurately applied to any medium. His respect for all art forms, even the most "primitive" scratches in dirt or a "high-class" abstract painting, is inspiring and gives me hope that maybe other readers of the text will try to justify comics in the same manner. The possibilities for comics are endless, but it's up to society to accept their power and their ability to impact visual media just as strongly as other traditional art forms can. The combination of text and drawing can be extremely persuasive and effective at conveying meaning because both are forms of expression we've used since the beginning of man kind. However, it is up to us to recognize these "inherent truths" that McCloud believes in and start becoming believers in the possibilities ourselves.
