I've been into photography since high school, but I never took any classes or learned how to properly use a camera. My dad generously let me borrow one of his expensive nikons and occasionally offered tips when necessary, but for some reason I was incapable of retaining even the most basic procedures. To this day I still claim to be a point and shoot kind of photographer because I honestly don't have the technical skills to even fathom adjusting lighting or shutter speed.
So I guess the photo I'm most proud of can be credited to sheer luck. It may not have taken much skill. I saw something cool, I took a photo, and somehow it came out like this:
But out of all of the photos I've ever taken, it's one of my favorites. I love the warm colors in contrast with the dark silhouettes. I love the way the sail has just eclipsed the sunset, like the moment is fleeting and the day is about to end. One of the best parts about it is that I took the photo when I was visiting Santa Barbara for the first time. It represents so much more than just a pretty sunset to me. This is where I go to school and where I get the privilege to live. I am proud of this photo because despite my unorthodox methods I still produced something beautiful, something that can encompass my experiences here in a tangible, visible way. And who knows, maybe if I had fumbled around with my camera settings or taken the time to change my position I wouldn't have gotten this shot at the right time. Or maybe I'm just trying to justify my ignorance about my own major...
