"Jenni" climbing a tree...
I thought Erika's "half cat, half girl" narrative was hilarious. I really enjoy her quirky style and her willingness to do strange things in public/around her roommates/in class just because she finds it fun or personally fulfilling. There are so many internet bloggers out there who post bizarre stories about themselves that it's often difficult to distinguish a spoof from a "real" video. It's easy to make up lies about yourself and then create a youtube video out of it, because being online gives a sort of anonymity. You can create any persona you want and no one will know the difference. Erika's impersonation of a girl named Jenni who wears a cat suit and believes she has both cat and human abilities was an extreme form of this tendency for the web to attract the most outlandish characters. I liked the way she spliced the video together because it provided both a Q&A segment along with clips of her pretending to go about a normal day.
I also really liked Catie's photo sequence. I thought her work was very convincing and like Desiree said, her photos could even pass as the original advertisements. I think she selected classic examples of the awkwardness of modern ads and by reenacting them she was able to comment on what my project attempted to illustrate, which is the mismatch of reality and society's visual representation of reality. No one lays on the ground with their feet on the wall and laughs. When you do the pose yourself it feels ridiculous, yet when you see it in an ad you might not think twice. Overall I thought the quality of her photographs was the best part, and I admire her photographic skill.
