Today I went through my contact list and sent a positive/complimentary text to every phone number, even to the ones I haven't used in months. Last year a girl I barely knew through mutual friends sent me a text message along the lines of "you're such a great, gorgeous person" totally out of the blue. It was so simple, yet so flattering. It probably took her two seconds to type, but it brightened the rest of my day. I replied thanks, and a few days later sent her something similar. Even though we had never had a long conversation or hung out one on one, her positive attitude and kind demeanor always stuck out to me.
A lot of the numbers in my phone are never used. I text my closest girl friends to ask when we should have dinner or when to meet up, and I only call my parents. Some of the people on my contact list are old friends from high school who have drifted away after the frenzy of freshman year in college. I never know what to say to strike up a conversation with them because so much time has passed. Here are some of the texts I sent out:
"You are incredibly outgoing, sweet and full of energy. I hope you're having a blast at Chapman."
"I miss our midnight donut runs and embarrassing jam sessions in my truck. Berkeley better be treating you with equally awesome adventures."
"You're amazing. End of story."
You get the idea. Most people responded with smilie faces and thanks, and some sent back compliments or memories of their own. Some people who I haven't talked to in a while responded with confusion. But regardless, I hope my small act of kindness inspired them to do the same to others, even if they just texted someone else to laugh about how weird/random I am.
