This photograph consists of mini silicon cupcake holders and nothing more. And yet despite its simplicity, somehow it is still visually intriguing. I realize that I may sound biased, but I honestly do think that as far as creating "art" out of a random object, I at least managed to configure something in an intentional, thought out manner. By flipping a cupcake holder upside down or stacking it on top of another out of the context of the kitchen, I created a pattern that doesn't resemble the original usage of such an item in the slightest. I removed the utilitarian function of the holders as baking assistants and gave them a special focus on their own. The contrast of light and dark, the repetition of concentric circles, and the texture of the materials all add something to the composition. Are they mini targets? Are they hanging on a wall, or are they just sitting on wood? So many possibilities for such a quickly assembled image in my dorm room!
These sculptures are located outside of Google headquarters in my hometown. When I drove by one day and spotted a giant cupcake sculpture, I knew I had to take photos with it (if you couldn't tell by now, I love desserts/cupcakes). Apparently they're related to Google's Android mobile campaign, which would give them purpose as an advertisement. But to random people walking by, these sculptures could have so many amusing reasons for being there. Are they the rejects from Katy Perry's California Girls video? Are they a jungle gym for children to play on? Is it a social commentary of American obesity and consumerism? What if the Android sculpture actually was a giant, usable Android for people to test? My favorite use for these sculptures is obviously to take silly pictures with them and to confuse all of my facebook friends about how I could have found something so amazing, as seen below.
There are so many art pieces out there that are abstract or confusing, but everything has a purpose. Everything is done for a reason, even if the artist themselves doesn't realize it.
